Amazing Adventures #11 is the first “new” Beast. In this issue he turns blue and there is a flashback to his origin. Because of the importance of the Beast in the X-men universe and difficulty of finding this edition in high grade with it’s black cover, it remains a sought after Bronze Age comic.

Amazing Adventures #11 has only 2 copies in CGC 9.8, with the last one selling in 2009 for over $7,300! A 9.6 copy sold in 2012 for about $750, illustrating just how much small difference in condition can bring. Lower grade issues, while still highly desirable, sell for much less.

Showcase 8 contains the second Silver Age appearance of the Flash and has remained one of the most valuable comics of the age.

It’s not the first appearance, so should you pursue this book as an investment? It depends.

The comic is desirable for strict collectors and for completists. For strict investors my opinion is you should pursue other comics for your portfolio unless you find a great deal or arbitrage opportunity and if so it may be worth the quick flip. That strategy puts you a little further into the speculator camp but it may be worth the time and money if the conditions are right.

Why it’s important

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was one of the first independent comic books to really hit the big time. Outside of the comic book itself it has spawned movies, television cartoons, toys and more licensed items than can be mentioned. This perpetual interest keeps the comic book in the limelight.  The movie remake in 2014 is also helping push this comic to new heights.

The Gotcha

The first issue is in black and white with a black cover prone to easy damage. High grade copies are more difficult to find. The big gotcha are the counterfeit copies in circulation. For that reason, unless you are an expert, I can highly recommend sticking to CGC copies for purchase.

The 2o14 reboot of the movie franchise has pushed some copies up in value.  A copy of TMNT #1 in CGC 9.8 (the highest known graded copy) has sold as high as $22,752 in 2011, although it has recently sold for $15,000.  CGC 9.4 copies have moved from the $4,000 – $5,000 range a couple of years ago up to a new high of almost $7,500 in 2014 (only one copy sold for that amount, most went in the $5,000-$6,000 range)
