Comic Book Values Archives

In this week’s sales and value update I wanted to take a look at the Walking Dead.  Season 3 of the television series premiered last week and it seems hotter than ever, especially for the comics.

I focused on the first issue in past sales updates, but with this season we see issues featuring key characters really moving for high prices.  Last week a Walking Dead 19, first Michonne, sell for $510 in CGC 9.8 condition.  Pretty impressive.

The hunt is now on for other character first appearances, and the comics are moving fast.

Walking Dead #27, first Governor, CGC 9.8 for $395 last week, CGC 9.4 went for $250.  Heck, even a CGC 9.2 sold for $127.50.

There is also some speculation growing on Walking Dead #61, 1st Chew.

When will it end?

If you’ve read my posts or signed up for the crash course you know I look at modern comics as a get in and out proposition.  It will end at some point, always has.  The questions is how high will these comics go in the meantime?

Your guess is probably as good as mine.

If you’re playing this speculation game, good luck!

Comic Book Value Mistakes – Under Values

In my Comic Book Value and Selling Secrets guide I talk about what is thought to be the most common value mistake, overvaluing. Even though this is a common mistake, especially with novices, you still need to be careful not to undervalue your comics. A recent E-bay auction serves as a perfect example.

Dynamic Comics #8 is an esoteric comic released in the 1940’s by Harry ‘A’ Chesler publishing. Most collectors are unfamiliar with it since it’s seen so rarely, but it is considered a classic cover. The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide states values from $258 in VG 4.0 to $387 in Fine 5.0. Last week a CGC 5.0 copy sold for $2,247.00 on E-bay, garnering 36 bids.

Rare, classic comics like this reveal a limitation of a print price guide. This comic is sold so rarely that accurate pricing is difficult to come by. It will be interesting to watch how or if the Overstreet Guide reacts to this sale next year.

If you have some of these rare comics, E-bay or other auction houses could be the place to sell. The various options for selling along with the pros and cons of each method are covered in the Comic Value and Selling book.

Iron Man 55 Values Falling

After the impressive upswing in Iron Man 55 (first Thanos) sales prices, it appears the party may be over. The Avengers movie stoked the hype on this book, but a look at actual sales, giving us a realistic marketplace value, the data is in and it doesn’t look good.

In early 2012 this comic in CGC 9.6 was selling in the thousand dollar range. After the Avengers movie selling prices went through the roof, topping at $2,100 mark in July. In the last month prices have are in the $1,600 range. The buyers at the $2,000 range took quite a hit. Watch to see how this plays out as we approach the movie.
