Comic Book Basics Archives

Heritage Auctions recently sold several high grade comics from the Don and Maggie Thompson collection.  Don and Maggie were instrumental in starting the Comic Buyer’s Guide.  Don passed away several years ago and Maggie kept working on the guide and several other projects.  I ran into her a few years ago at the San Diego Comic Con and she was a pleasure to talk to.   The comic books she has decided to sell are impressive to say the least.  Here are some sales highlights (price includes Buyer’s Premium):

  • Avengers #1 CGC 9.4 – 89,625.00
  • Daredevil #1 CGC 9.2 – $8,365.00
  • Fantastic Four #52 CGC 9.8 – $16,730.00 (an impossible black cover!)
  • Incredible Hulk #1 CGC 8.5 – $58,256.25
  • Incredible Hulk #181 CGC 9.8 – $9,560.00 (first Wolverine)

Atlas Comics Resource

Atlas Comics (not to be confused with Atlas/Seaboard) is the company that spanned the time between Martin Goodman’s Timely Comics and the more familiar Marvel Comics.

Timely’s last comics was Captain America Comics #75 (Feb. 1950). The familiar 1950’s Atlas Globe then appeared and this was the overarching corporate entity for Goodman’s comic book publishing arm. The Atlas of the 1950’s tended to follow hot trends.

Atlas titles continue to be sought after by collectors, but for the most part have never really hit the big time like their predecessor Timely and eventually Marvel. One of the best resources for Atlas Comics is Atlas Tales. The site collects tons of information about the titles, characters, writers and artists that made this company tick. There’s also a cover collection.

If you are looking for Atlas comics values, the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide remains an important price resource, and also contains a lot of research information.

Jack Kirby Documentary Video

Jack Kirby is one of the most important and famous artists in the history of comic books.  Along with Stan Lee he is responsible for most of the Marvel Comics foundation that still thrives today.

His original art is highly coveted today, and in the video below you can learn more about this comic book icon.
