Showcase 8 Value and Investment Survey

Showcase 8 contains the second Silver Age appearance of the Flash and has remained one of the most valuable comics of the age.

It’s not the first appearance, so should you pursue this book as an investment? It depends.

The comic is desirable for strict collectors and for completists. For strict investors my opinion is you should pursue other comics for your portfolio unless you find a great deal or arbitrage opportunity and if so it may be worth the quick flip. That strategy puts you a little further into the speculator camp but it may be worth the time and money if the conditions are right.

To give you some perspective on current price trends for collectors, investors and speculators (and perhaps find that great deal) keep an eye on the issues offered for sale below. Don’t forget to check GPAnalysis and completed auctions to track current values.

There may be no other modern comic as intriguing as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1. This comic book remains one of the most valuable modern comics, and essentially serves as the launchpad for the 1980’s to present Independent comic book movement.

Why it’s important

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was one of the first independent comic books to really hit the big time. Outside of the comic book itself it has spawned movies, television cartoons, toys and more licensed items than can be mentioned. This perpetual interest keeps the comic book in the limelight.  The movie remake in 2014 is also helping push this comic to new heights.

The Gotcha

The first issue is in black and white with a black cover prone to easy damage. High grade copies are more difficult to find. The big gotcha are the counterfeit copies in circulation. For that reason, unless you are an expert, I can highly recommend sticking to CGC copies for purchase.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 Value

The 2o14 reboot of the movie franchise has pushed some copies up in value.  A copy of TMNT #1 in CGC 9.8 (the highest known graded copy) has sold as high as $22,752 in 2011, although it has recently sold for $15,000.  CGC 9.4 copies have moved from the $4,000 – $5,000 range a couple of years ago up to a new high of almost $7,500 in 2014 (only one copy sold for that amount, most went in the $5,000-$6,000 range)

In this value and investment survey we’ll talk about one of most valuable comics of the Golden Age, Flash Comics #1.

Flash Comics #1

Flash Comics #1 January 1940

Flash Comics #1 is the Golden Age first issue of the every popular Flash. The Flash has survived the Golden, Silver and Modern ages, as well as reasonably successful (if not corny) television show.

The Flash has gone through several iterations over the years, but the issue we’re talking about here is the Golden Age edition. His popularity experienced a resurgence in the Silver Age with Showcase 4, the subject of another of our investment surveys.

In 2010 the Mile High copy of Flash Comics #1 sold $450,000. Copies in the VG to VG+ condition have sold for just under $12,000 as recently as 2010. Like any of these old, rare issues, they are not offered for sale frequently and you absolutely must be careful of restoration.

The Flash remain an popular figure and it’s value gives it a solid position on our most valuable comics list. DC is determined to bring him back into the modern era of movies in television with a tv series slated for October 2014. One to watch.
