Battlestar Galactica

This may be a little off topic, but there is a BSG comic book out there and this is my blog (and there is a pop culture connection) so I can talk about it. I’m not a big TV fan, but one of the two shows I do watch is BSG. If you haven’t watched the show, pick up the miniseries on DVD and you will be hooked in about 2 minutes. That’s what happened to me.

Two years ago my wife had to head back to Michigan for more than a month to take care of a relative. I ended up doing a long distance commute between my home in California and Michigan each week. My schedule pretty much consisted of me coming home from my job, looking through the mail, make sure the neighbor checked the house, get a few hours of sleep and then try to go stand-by back to Detroit. Fun.

Anyway, my wife and kids bought me an iPod for Father’s Day and I downloaded the first mini-series episode on iTunes for the long flight. I was a fan of the original series (hey, I was a teen, so give me a break!), but the new series captivated me in about two minutes. The first year was excellent and the production has kept up the high standard over the last few years.

Unfortunately, we are in the last season. It’s bittersweet. On one hand I will miss the series, but on the other I love the fact that it will end!!! Sci-Fi is not drawing this out until the last penny of profit is drawn from the series, everyone is sick of it, and it goes out with a whimper. Thank you for going out strong!

If you haven’t seen the series you are fortunate in one way. You can rent the discs and avoid the agonizing wait to see what happens week after week. Of course I wouldn’t plan on getting much sleep on a night you start watching the shows. My wife and I spent a few late nights with a few adult beverages under the guise of “okay, just one more episode.” Yes, my wife watches it, she is not a comic reader or sci-fi fan, so it should give you an idea of the quality of the show.

The Stanley Cup Finals are finished (Go Wings!), Lost is done for the season, so this is it for me and the television. If you are interested, I included a video widget below to check out.

I tried and tried to get into BSG but it just never “took” for me. There is a comic out, like you said – it’s either Dark Horse or IDW – but I haven’t heard much about it.

That’s one thing I noticed about it and it may have been what I didn’t care for: it is a sci-fi show, but that’s just – you know – like window-dressing. I mean, it could very easily have been set anywhere else, in any other era, because it focused on the characters and their relationships more than really anything else. I know there were some sci-fi/background-specific storylines, but you know what I’m trying to say.

Speaking of all this, I came across this blog I think you’ll dig: The Science of Battlestar Galactica.

I must admit, I didn’t start watching BSG until this season. I do tend to enjoy it, but it is too dark, somber and soap opera like for me to become an extreme fan.

I did watch quite a few episodes of the old series and I did like Lorne Greene, even though the old episodes were somewhat cheezy. I guess I enjoy cheese sometimes.

The present series definitely has a large fan base, but I guess my admiration still goes to the two Stargate series. Yes, there are those who would disagree with me, but Stargate was some of the finest sci fi on the tube.

I will be interested in who the fifth cylon is though.

    Dave,

I’m impressed you started watching it this season, there is a lot to catch up on! I can see how it may seem a little “soap opera” at this point since there has been so much character development.

If you get a chance, rent the mini-series. It can definitely be viewed as a stand-alone, and it’s what really got me hooked.

  5. Oh no! It looks like Earth was a bust and we don’t get to find out anything new, including who is the 5th Cylon, until next January. Is this true? Oh well, so goes the life of a soap opera (ha ha). Anyway, it will give me time to purchase the original mini series and give it a look through. Ta.

That was one way to settle all the questions that were sure to arise about the discovery of Earth! I’ll be looking forward to find out what happened to us! Ha!
