Why it’s important

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was one of the first independent comic books to really hit the big time. Outside of the comic book itself it has spawned movies, television cartoons, toys and more licensed items than can be mentioned. This perpetual interest keeps the comic book in the limelight.

The Gotcha

The first issue is in black and white with a black cover prone to easy damage. High grade copies are more difficult to find. The big gotcha are the counterfeit copies in circulation. For that reason, unless you are an expert, I can highly recommend sticking to CGC copies for purchase.

A copy of TMNT #1 in CGC 9.8 (the highest known graded copy) has sold as high as $22,752.CGC 9.4 copies can be had for around $4,000. The price drop is steep after that.
