Free Comic Book Value and Price Resources
In the previous comic book value post I talked about using the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide as a source. I also discussed the problems with “the guide.” Today I want to give you few free resources to help find the true value of your comic books.
UPDATE: Comic Book Secrets now has a quick Free Comic Book Values Page for your use. It walks you through finding comic book values and prices and helps you decide the best method for your situation. You can visit the free resource here: Free Comic Book Values
Since these resources are free, you know the old saying: ” you get what you pay for.” Don’t use just one of these sources as the means to come up with the value. If at all possible check out a few.
First off is comicpriceguide.com. This site has a semi-active forum, the ability to actually track your collection and several other features. You can use it to get some ballpark figures for your comics. The search can take a little time do to their tool and you do have to become a member to search, but it’s free.
Next we have nostomania.com. Again, it is free but you have to signup. It’s been a mixed bag for me, but you can use it in your value search.
Finally we have E-bay. I always use E-bay when I start my value search because it is free, easy to use, and contains so many up-to-the-minute sales prices. Anyone can go to E-bay and start searching for current auctions and get an idea of some prices. But to really get useful information you must do the free signup and it will let you search completed auctions. You must do this important step to get the most accurate information.
Here are a couple of little tricks for using E-bay. When you do an initial search for your comic books on the site, look for the “completed listings” box on the left of the page and then click on Show Items. Once you do this you will get a listing, if any, of the closed auctions.
The second little trick I use is to click on some of the actual auctions, especially if the price looks high, and then check the feedback. If the buyer, seller, or both have left positive feedback it is a good indication the sale went through and I can count on the value. If not I discount it and look for more reasonable numbers to arrive at my value. This helps weed out the scam auctions and bidders.
Finally, you can use the Google search tool to search for current retail values of your comic books. You’ll find the tool just below this text. The best way to use the search is to type in the title and issue number of your comic book, plus the term “value”, “price”, or “for sale”. An example would be “X-men 1 value”,”x-men 1 price” or “x-men 1 for sale”. Remember, this will give retail prices, if you are looking to sell your comic books a dealer will typically give you between 10% and 100% of the price depending on the desirability of the comic book.
Keep these sites in mind when you are searching for current sales prices on your comic books. They are good options to get the value and save money.

I have a copy of Sensational Spider-man #36 that was put together wrong by the publisher. It has several pages that are repeated & several more different pages that are repeated. Since it has all those repeats, it is also missing several pages. They are also printed out of order. I have not bought another copy to see what the missing pages are, or what order they are really supposed to be in. I have searched the internet since I first got the book (about a year and a half ago or so) to see if there were other copies of this book that were made wrong. I haven’t found any articles that relate to this. Have you heard of such a thing in the past? I have been reading & collecting comics for over 40 years & have never came across anything like this. The book is in new condition.
I recently came into some old comics. They are made by dell comics. Titles are Donald Duck Album(no.1239), Rocky and his friends(no.1128),New Funnies , Nancy and Sluggo,Walt Disneys Uncle Scrooge, Walt Disneys Vacation in Disneyland(no.1025). All of these are in fair to good condition. I also have a comic called “The Return of Gorgo” It’s volume 1, number 2. It’s in fair condition. Finally a Supermans Pal Jimmy Olsen no.55. All of these comics are originals and not reprints . All costs 10 cents and made in late 50s or early 60s. Any help would be good. A broad estimate would be great.
Dell comics can be readily found. Unfortunately there have been several “file” finds so they can also be found in top condition. With that said there are still some valuable issues. If you have a lot you should probably go through the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide and see if any stand out in value. The Return of Gorgo would only go for a couple of dollars if that due to condition. Depending on condition the Jimmy Olsen goes anywhere from about $10-$130. Take a look at our Comic Book Grading Basics for more information about condition.
Wow, Just got my entire collection from my moms house, ran in to a bit of financial problems, and decided to sell the lot, but just reading up on comics, prices and the such…all my memories of these books came back
Dont think im selling em again….I’ll put in some major overtime at the job
Good to see that comic’s are still alive…I dont have enough time to collect anymore, but I still love em
P.S. My collection ranges from mixed titles from the 70′s to the 90′s…tons of xmen…over 2000 books
i have a g.i.joe 1982 #1 blockbuster first issue its in fair shape you can read all of the words and the color is good does any one now the value thanks
George – the comic book you have can be valuable but it depends on the condition. If it’s really in “Fair” condition, unfortunately it isn’t worth much. I would suggest taking a look at my Comic Book Grading Basics to get a better idea of the grade (condition). GI Joe #1 has done well recently, especially with the movie.
i have a iron man comic book number 300 near mint and signed by artist and i cant find the value. Any ideas?
It is worth the cover price at best. If there are any flaws at all it would be worth much less and most likely would be found in a discount bin. Unfortunately a signature rarely adds to the value of the comic. If has been “slabbed” (CGC graded) and is in 9.8 condition or above and part of their Signature Line it could be worth more. Good luck!
I have an unopened “the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN” issue 363 which has the conclusion of CARNAGE. It’s a 30th anniversary edition. I picked it up as a kid thinking it might be valuable some day. Your thoughts would be appreciated! Thank you.
i have a sealed “web of spiderman” 30th anniversary hollogram edition#90. i was wondering if it was worth anything. thanks!
I have a Ghost Rider & Blaze Spiritis of Vengeance “Rise of The Midnight Sons” part 2 of 6. It says special collectors item issue. It is signed I believe by the illustrator and the seal of authenticity have never been broken leaving it in mint condition. Would you happen to know how much it is worth?
I have a copy of Astonishing X-men : Gifted vol 1 that is signed by both Joss Whedon and Cassaday, and it is in perfect condition..Do you know the value of it? thanks
These comics are very difficult to place a value on. This book usually sells for about cover price. Will the signatures bring more? It really depends if you can find a buyer who wants a signed comic book. Unlike sports memorabilia, signed comic books really don’t bring much if any more value. Many times they actually bring less. I’m sorry I can’t give you more solid information but it’s the nature of the marketplace. Good luck!
Hi my son has a few comic books on of them is
1st issue of a legend reborn it is an xman 50 year aniversery book . any idea ??
I have a Rex Allen comic book #11 ,1954, in pretty good condition. Is it worth anything?
At best about $6-10 if it is in Good or Very Good condition, but if you try to sell it to a dealer they will probably only give you a dollar or so. It’s not a high demand comic book. Is it the only one you have or do you have a run of them?
I have a autographed issue #675 Detective comic book it’s from june 1994. Could you tell me it’s Value? It also comes with a certificate of authenticity that says it’s a limited edition of about 5,ooo
I have a nearly complete 10 year collection, beginning with issue 1, of Conan the Barbarian comics. Is it worth much trying to sell, or are they only worth a few bucks each?
Lisa – that complete a collection is definitely worth selling in my opinion, especially if they are in at least decent shape. You may want to try selling them as a complete lot on E-bay. Good luck and let me know if I can
I have a 1961 Batman annual w/1001 stories of batman, I have looked at it and ther is no evidence it has even been opened, there is no damage of any sort and only slight yellowing at the top 1/2″ of the pages, otherwise crisp corners, wondering the value and is CGC grading worht it?
Thanks
Sounds like a really nice comic book. If it is in the higher grades it may definitely be worth sending to CGC. The pricing is all over the place for actual sales. For example, over the last few years CGC 8.0 copies have sold anywhere from the low $300′s to over $600. Food for thought.
I have several books that I’m interested in selling as a lot, and I’m trying to get an idea of what they would be worth as a lot. Or would it mean more profit if I sold seperate? 1972 #4 Marvel Team-up, Spidey and the Xmen….1972 #5 Marvel Team-up Spidey and Vision….1972 #1 The Defenders….1973 FIRST ISSUE #1 Ghost Rider….1972 #1 Luke Cage HERO for HIRE….1984 Vol. 1,2,3 and 4 Four Iss. Lmted Series, The Transformers.
Hello Admin, I have just cataloged my collection of over 1300 comics (mostly Marvel mid 80′s and some DC) and have an Excel document with them all on. Do you have any advice on who I could ask to look at this to see if it is worth selling as a collection? Many thanks. Peter WD
1980′s comic books are usually sold in bulk, especially in the numbers you have. If you decide to sell them you can go to a comic store and expect to get an offer of so much per book, 20 cents is not out of the norm, sometimes less depending on what you have. If you have a lot of Superhero books and they are in great condition it is probably worth your time to go through them and assign a value. With that many comics I usually recommend picking up a copy of the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide and getting an estimate. If you want to send me the list I can give you some ideas about selling. Become a member and you will have the e-mail to contact me.
Hi
I love zombies movies and back in 2003 I purchased Walking Dead #1 , #2 until #20 before I got married and forgot about it. Recently I was surprise to find out that the value of these comics have gone up especially the first one. How do I know what is actual value of this comic. FYI, I sealed all my comics in a plastic bag in a very good condition.
I’d do a quick search on E-bay to see what they are selling for. It will give you an estimate.
i have the amazing spider-man comic with the first apperance of the kingpin how much is it worth?
I have spectacular collectors items THE DARING AND THE DIFFERENT AN ALL-INFANTINO ISSUE DC SPECIAL No1 dec in1968 do you know how much it is worth. thanks I also have a comic TELL IT TO THE MARINES no16 it is the seal of SUPER COMIC 1964 DATE.
I have a mint condition of the Famouse first addition Limited Collection golden mint series Vol. 8 No. C-61 1979 SuperMan Dc Comics copy of the 1939 and i was wondering what if was worth anything.
If it is truly mint it may be worth a little bit, but if there is any flaw (and I mean even the most insignificant) they are really not worth more than a dollar or two. Reprints are a very tough market.
I have 174 “Fantastic Four” comics beginning
with # 6 dated Sept 1962 in good to very good
condition. Are they marketable?
Walt, yes they are very marketable. There may several desirable issues in that run depending on what you have. In good to very good condition they are most likely to be picked up by collectors. You may want to check and see if you have issue 48 (first Galactus), 49-50 (the Galactus story continues and Silver Surfer), #52 (Black Panther). Those are just off the top of my head. Silver Age superhero comic books always seem to have a market. Good luck!
Thanks for reply. I do have all those issue numbers
48 & 52 are VG 49-50 G – any advise on how to
reach appropriate collectors?
I actually have a number of others, including X-Men collection, Wonder Woman, Superman, etc
Don’t know if we should try to sell everything to
one source or even how to begin.
I have a spider man first editio just regular spider man not the amazing spider man or anything it has a platinum cover and is in very good condition how much is it worth?
Walt, It sounds like you have some really nice books. I do offer an easy to follow comic book selling guide that gives much of the information you’ll need. You have several options available to sell your comic books, from selling to a dealer, running and ad in the local newspaper or craigslist, all the way to E-bay. It comes down to how much time and effort you want to put into selling your books. The more time and effort the more money you get (usually, if you do things correctly). There are pros and cons of each method and certain “tricks of the trade” I cover in the report. In the limited space of this reply I will say this, make sure you get get more than one offer for your comics. If you try to sell to a dealer, make sure you offer the list to more than three. If you decide to go the E-bay route naturally you will have several “offers” by virtue of the bidding system. I hope this helps and good luck with your comics. P.S. Fantastic Four #48 retails for just over $100 in Very Good condition to give you an idea of what you have.
Without knowing the specific issue number I can’t give an estimate. The platinum cover sounds like a modern comic, and if so if it is only in very good condition it is not worth much.
Thanks much. I have downloaded your selling guide. The collection is all dated in the 50′s 60′s &
70′s and we see a Nov 72 #1 Swamp Thing NM & a
1957 #2 Argo “Boots and Her Buddies” so it is quite
diversified. Have had the collection for 20 yrs (death in family) and it is time to go to work on it.
Walt, Thanks, sounds like you have some nice books there. If you have more questions feel free to send me an e-mail at ” questions “at” comicbooksecrets.com” just make it a normal e-mail address with an “@”.
Hi, I recently got iron man comics and got
them signed by the one and only bob Layton. I was wondering how much they would be worth here’s what he signed. Iron man #127-130,134,136-138,140,146,151-152,157,159-162,165,216-231,234-239,248.
Also I have #105, #258-266. Not autographed.
All books are vg-nm.
I know #128 is Avery important issue and that one is nm.
What would be you estimate or value on these comics now?
Oh and I took a picture of him and have video to show proof. Even got the flyer of his event.
i got a punisher2099 #1 and punisher war zone #1 – both are in mint condish.can i get a value???
oh ,what is the best punisher comic series to collect? thanks for your time
I’ve got “Radioactive Man” number 1 special edition (you can see his skeleton) along with the regular edition, both in mint, never even taken out of the bag. But can’t find a value for it. Can you help?
I have 3 comic books all three are signed with certificate of authenticity, they are in plastic sleeves all most perfect condition. Cable 1st issue, X-Factor #71 , and The Uncanny X-Men #300 ( 30 Year Anniversary) Do you have any advice on a price for these. I am looking to sell them. I looked for their values but cannot find a value with signatures.
I have a spiderman comic, I think it is the 11th one ever made. It came out in 1977, “Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider Man” Could you tell me how much this might be worth?
The Spectacular Spider-man was actually a spin-off title and not part of the original Amazing Spider-man run that began in the 1960′s. A perfect condition copy would be worth something, but not nearly as much as the 11th issue of the original series. If there are any flaws it’s value would drop tremendously.
Please refer to my article about signed comic book values to help you. Good luck!
i have the clown ,violator, overtkill and tremmor and all of them have the comics and are frome 1994 how much are all of those together
