Free Comic Book Value and Price Resources

January 19th, 2008 · 75 Comments

In the previous comic book value post I talked about using the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide as a source.  I also discussed the problems with “the guide.” Today I want to give you few free resources to help find the true value of your comic books.

Since these resources are free, you know the old saying: ” you get what you pay for.”  Don’t use just one of these sources as the means to come up with the value.  If at all possible check out a few.

First off is comicpriceguide.com.  This site has a semi-active forum, the ability to actually track your collection and several other features.  You can use it to get some ballpark figures for your comics.  The search can take a little time do to their tool and you do have to become a member to search, but it’s free.

Next we have nostomania.com. Again, it is free but you have to signup.  It’s been a mixed bag for me, but you can use it in your value search.

Finally we have E-bay.   I always use E-bay when I start my value search because it is free, easy to use, and contains so many up-to-the-minute sales prices.  Anyone can go to E-bay and start searching for current auctions and get an idea of some prices. But to really get useful information you must do the free signup and it will let you search completed auctions.  You must do this important step to get the most accurate information.

Here are a couple of little tricks for using E-bay.  When you do an initial search for your comic books on the site, look for the “completed listings” box on the left of the page and then click on Show Items.  Once you do this you will get a listing, if any, of the closed auctions.

The second little trick I use is to click on some of the actual auctions, especially if the price looks high, and then check the feedback.  If the buyer, seller, or both have left positive feedback it is a good indication the sale went through and I can count on the value.  If not I discount it and look for more reasonable numbers to arrive at my value.  This helps weed out the scam auctions and bidders.

Keep these sites in mind when you are searching for current sales prices on your comic books.  They are good options to get the value and save money.

I have the No. 3 from 1988 of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic. It is signed and in mint condition. I was wondering if you could give me an idea of how much it is worth? Thanks!

  • 3 admin // Nov 18, 2008 at 4:56 pm

    Carmen,
Can you give me the full title? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #3 from 1988 that I know of is actually “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures” published by Archie Comics Group and based on the TV show. If so, the book by itself is worth very little, but you may be able to find someone who would be willing to pay a little more for an authentic signed copy.

Unfortunately signed copy values are all over the place and there is no reliable way to give a concrete value to a signature. Good luck!

  • 4 admin // Nov 18, 2008 at 5:02 pm

Cable #1 is worth very little unless it’s in almost perfect condition and CGC graded (CGC 9.9 or better, even in 9.8 it wouldn’t be worth the grading expense). Unfortunately it was published at the time of the great boom and subsequent crash of comic books in the early 1990’s.

  • 8 David // Dec 17, 2008 at 5:16 pm

    Got it thanks!

  • 9 admin // Dec 18, 2008 at 9:18 am

Rise of the Apocalypse is currently valued at cover or less, and I’ve seen them in several fifty cent and quarter discount bins.

I have 2 comics that I need a book value for:
The Westerner March 1949 Issue #19
    Front Page Comics
    Thanks

  • 12 admin // Mar 26, 2009 at 4:48 pm

    Debbie,

The Westerner #19 ranges from under $10 to maybe $80 depending on the condition. Remember, the condition is an integral part to find any potential value. I would need the issue numbers and basic condition for the Front Page Comics to give you an idea.

I have 3 shoe boxes full of comics from mostly the 70’s, and up.. a bunch of the invincible iron man, human torch, kamandi, and lots of others.. wondering if they are worth anything and worth selling??

  • 16 josh // Apr 20, 2009 at 6:53 pm

i have a 50 yr. reprint of action comics but it was misstapled like to inches towards the cover and i was wondering if it is worth any more for the defect

  • 17 admin // Apr 21, 2009 at 12:30 pm

Ryan – Iron Man is a desirable title, especially with the movie hype. The others may do okay, it all depends on the condition. If the Human Torch and Kamandi are in low condition they may not bring much. Pick up a copy of the price guide, or visit our value pages and look up some prices on E-Bay. Based on that you can make a decision whether or not you should sell. Without specific issue numbers and condition it is impossible to say.

Josh – the staple defect will not add to the value of the comic, and for that specific issue would probably take away from the value. The only books that go up with errors are usually some sort of mistake in the story (like swearing that happened recently and the comics were pulled). Printing defects are truly defects and reduce the condition. The only printing defect that I can think of that contradicts this rule is a double cover, and it usually only matters because the inside cover is often in better condition than the outer.

    Thanks for the questions!

I have a marvel comic limited series comic of wolverine vol.1,no.2,october,1982 i want to know how much it is worth

  • 19 admin // May 4, 2009 at 11:17 am

It depends on the condition. Both of those comics are in demand, especially with the blockbuster movie. Let me know what condition they are in and I can give you more information. Good luck!

  • 21 admin // May 13, 2009 at 11:39 am

Unless they are in absolutely pristine condition, they aren’t worth very much. I have seen them at conventions for $1 each at most – and that was in what I would call VF condition.

  • 22 CGC Comic Books // May 18, 2009 at 10:09 am

i have 225 comic books from the 80’s lots of marvels and dc’s can you tell me how mcuh theyre all worth

  • 24 admin // May 20, 2009 at 7:35 am

    Thanks for the comment CGC.

Sam – you’ll have to do the research for that many books. You can start at our comic book values free course, or pick up an Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide.

A lot of 80’s comics are usually found in the 25 cent bins, but depending on the issues and titles, some are worth a decent amount of money.

i have a spideman comic vol #1 no. 1 and i would like to know if it is worth anything ???

  • 27 admin // Jul 3, 2009 at 7:20 am

Check the year, but if it is really Vol1 #1 and not a reprint it is quite valuable. Also make sure it is Amazing Spider-man from 1963. If you need more info let us know.

  • 28 sam g // Jul 29, 2009 at 5:54 pm

Hi need some help, i have a 1980 comic book “The Empire Skrikes Back”. I have seen a few on ebay and such, but they are all slightly different from mine. Normally it seems they have the logo on back, mine dosnt. Also mine is published by Arrow Books Ltd, and it say’s “This book is sold subject to the condition that it shall not, by way of trade or otherwise, be lent, resold, hired out, or otherwise circulated without the publishers prior consent in any form of binding or cover other than that in which it is published and without a similar condition includin this condition bein imposed on the subseqent purchaser”.
    Be gratefull for your help
    Thanks

Forgot to say, mine also dosnt have price on front, it has it on the back and price is 90p.
    Thanks again

  • 30 Gary // Jul 30, 2009 at 7:12 am

What’s the value of my three comics? It’s the Spider man and Captain America Danger: Demon on a rampage December issue of 1973 issue 52. And Batman detective comics June 95 issue? And the Flash convention of the flash villans October 86 issue? And Tim Tyler Cowboy 1949 number 12?

  • 31 admin // Jul 30, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Gary, I need to know the condition in order to help you out. Without more details I can tell you the Tim Tyler is probably the most valuable of the bunch due to age, but if the Spider-man/Captain America (it is probably a Marvel Team Up #52) is in perfect shape, it could be worth something also.

  • 32 admin // Jul 30, 2009 at 9:08 pm

Sam, sounds like you have a UK variant of the Empire Strikes Back. There isn’t a lot of demand for those issues, so there isn’t a consistent price I could quote you for the comic. Older Silver Age UK variants can sell for a significant amount, though usually less than their US counterparts. Sorry I can’t be of more help. The one suggestion I have is to do a completed auction search on the UK Ebay site and see if you can find an issue for sale to compare. Good luck!

  • 33 James // Jul 31, 2009 at 9:43 am

I have some DC comics in I think about good condition example Batman# 172 what could they be worth I have about 25 of them.

  • 34 sam g // Jul 31, 2009 at 6:01 pm

hi, me again it say,s in comic book that it was published in the united states of america.

  • 35 Gary // Aug 2, 2009 at 10:14 am

Spiderman/Captain America is in good shape with a little rip but most pages are in good shape. The Tim Tyler is in really good shape and is not ripped at all. Can you tell me an estimate of what they are worth?

  • 36 admin // Aug 4, 2009 at 9:42 am

Gary – the Spider-man/Captain America is worth a dollar or less based on the condition (ripped). That title is quite common, especially in lower condition and is found in a lot of 50 cent boxes at conventions. The Tim Tyler would probably sell somewhere between $20 and $50 at retail depending on the precise condition. If you sell to a dealer you will get significantly less. Good luck with the books.

  • 37 admin // Aug 4, 2009 at 9:44 am

Sam – those books will say published in the U.S. but the price in pence means they were sent overseas for sale, or printed here on a different print run. When looking for foreign editions the cover price is what matters (here in the States I see Canadian editions quite frequently at conventions).

  • 38 sam g // Aug 4, 2009 at 4:24 pm

hi, Sam again, yes determined to check out every possiabilty. This one say’s not for resale in canada. I know it look’s like it’s not really worth anything but thouht i should just say just in case.
Appreicate all your help, thank’s very much.

Hello I have two green lantern comics issue
number 52 and 54 both are in mint condition and sealed in packages and both are signed by Ron Marz. Also I have a sealed issue of number 8 of the Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, the one where
spidey for the first time ever gets the black spider suit. It is also in mint condition. Please let me know if the are worth anything. Thank you

  • 40 Arlena // Aug 24, 2009 at 5:06 am

I have two Incredible Hulk comics, (Vol 1, issue number 99 Jan. 1968 “The Incredible Hulk and the Sub-Mariner”) and (Vol 1, issue number 106 August 1968, “The Incredible Hulk”) which are in good condition. Can you tell me if they are worth anything? Thank you.

  • 41 admin // Aug 24, 2009 at 8:40 am

Travis – Sounds like the Green Lantern comics are the newer series, so there is not an established price for sealed and signed books. You could do a search on E-bay to see if anyone has sold them recently. The Secret Wars #8 could be very valuable if it is truly mint. CGC graded copies have sold for several hundred dollars in the CGC 9.8 range.

  • 42 admin // Aug 24, 2009 at 8:41 am

Arlena – The first comic you mentioned is probably a Tales to Astonish #99, and would sell for a few dollars in good condition. The Incredible Hulk #106 would also sell for only a few dollars in good condition. Good luck!

It says there are only 250 that were autographed and I have the 23rd of 250. please if anyone knows how much this comic would go for please leave a msg.

  • 45 admin // Sep 2, 2009 at 9:36 pm

It sounds like most of those books are very common and not very valuable. I would need more information, issue number and condition, to tell you for sure. Check out our comic book values course for more information on finding the value of your books.

  • 46 kara // Sep 8, 2009 at 12:58 pm

i have a wonder woman (the challenge of the mask #24) says its from 1947 wondering if i could find out approximate value

  • 47 admin // Sep 9, 2009 at 9:14 am

Kara – the comic book you have may have significant value depending on some more details. Is the comic book Wonder Woman #24 and is the “Challenge of the Mask” the title of one of the stories? Also, could you describe the basic condition of the book? With those two details I can give you a better idea. An original Wonder Woman #24 could range from about $75 to upwards of a thousand depending on the condition.

  • 48 kara // Sep 10, 2009 at 5:39 am

it is # 24 the challange of the mask, as far as condition it is in pretty good condition (not perfect) a few nicks on the cover but completely in tact slight yellowing of pages inside but no creased corners or tears

  • 49 mike // Sep 20, 2009 at 7:44 am

I have a comic The World Of Jughead #149 from October 1967. There is some minorcorner wear but no tears and no markings on the interior. Pages are yellowing. Anu idea of the cost for this?

    Thanks

    Does it have any value?

  • 51 Floyd // Oct 8, 2009 at 3:08 pm

I have a copy of Sensational Spider-man #36 that was put together wrong by the publisher. It has several pages that are repeated & several more different pages that are repeated. Since it has all those repeats, it is also missing several pages. They are also printed out of order. I have not bought another copy to see what the missing pages are, or what order they are really supposed to be in. I have searched the internet since I first got the book (about a year and a half ago or so) to see if there were other copies of this book that were made wrong. I haven’t found any articles that relate to this. Have you heard of such a thing in the past? I have been reading & collecting comics for over 40 years & have never came across anything like this. The book is in new condition.

  • 52 dan // Oct 12, 2009 at 1:03 am

I recently came into some old comics. They are made by dell comics. Titles are Donald Duck Album(no.1239), Rocky and his friends(no.1128),New Funnies , Nancy and Sluggo,Walt Disneys Uncle Scrooge, Walt Disneys Vacation in Disneyland(no.1025). All of these are in fair to good condition. I also have a comic called “The Return of Gorgo” It’s volume 1, number 2. It’s in fair condition. Finally a Supermans Pal Jimmy Olsen no.55. All of these comics are originals and not reprints . All costs 10 cents and made in late 50s or early 60s. Any help would be good. A broad estimate would be great.

  • 53 admin // Oct 16, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Dell comics can be readily found. Unfortunately there have been several “file” finds so they can also be found in top condition. With that said there are still some valuable issues. If you have a lot you should probably go through the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide and see if any stand out in value. The Return of Gorgo would only go for a couple of dollars if that due to condition. Depending on condition the Jimmy Olsen goes anywhere from about $10-$130. Take a look at our Comic Book Grading Basics for more information about condition.

Wow, Just got my entire collection from my moms house, ran in to a bit of financial problems, and decided to sell the lot, but just reading up on comics, prices and the such…all my memories of these books came back

Dont think im selling em again….I’ll put in some major overtime at the job

Good to see that comic’s are still alive…I dont have enough time to collect anymore, but I still love em

P.S. My collection ranges from mixed titles from the 70’s to the 90’s…tons of xmen…over 2000 books

  • 55 george // Nov 1, 2009 at 5:19 pm

i have a g.i.joe 1982 #1 blockbuster first issue its in fair shape you can read all of the words and the color is good does any one now the value thanks

  • 56 admin // Nov 4, 2009 at 9:34 pm

George – the comic book you have can be valuable but it depends on the condition. If it’s really in “Fair” condition, unfortunately it isn’t worth much. I would suggest taking a look at my Comic Book Grading Basics to get a better idea of the grade (condition). GI Joe #1 has done well recently, especially with the movie.

  • 57 jake // Nov 6, 2009 at 5:46 pm

i have a iron man comic book number 300 near mint and signed by artist and i cant find the value. Any ideas?

  • 58 admin // Nov 6, 2009 at 5:58 pm

It is worth the cover price at best. If there are any flaws at all it would be worth much less and most likely would be found in a discount bin. Unfortunately a signature rarely adds to the value of the comic. If has been “slabbed” (CGC graded) and is in 9.8 condition or above and part of their Signature Line it could be worth more. Good luck!

  • 63 admin // Nov 27, 2009 at 10:14 pm

These comics are very difficult to place a value on. This book usually sells for about cover price. Will the signatures bring more? It really depends if you can find a buyer who wants a signed comic book. Unlike sports memorabilia, signed comic books really don’t bring much if any more value. Many times they actually bring less. I’m sorry I can’t give you more solid information but it’s the nature of the marketplace. Good luck!

At best about $6-10 if it is in Good or Very Good condition, but if you try to sell it to a dealer they will probably only give you a dollar or so. It’s not a high demand comic book. Is it the only one you have or do you have a run of them?

  • 69 admin // Jan 24, 2010 at 11:23 pm

Lisa – that complete a collection is definitely worth selling in my opinion, especially if they are in at least decent shape. You may want to try selling them as a complete lot on E-bay. Good luck and let me know if I can

  • 70 Gavin // Feb 3, 2010 at 10:00 am

I have a 1961 Batman annual w/1001 stories of batman, I have looked at it and ther is no evidence it has even been opened, there is no damage of any sort and only slight yellowing at the top 1/2″ of the pages, otherwise crisp corners, wondering the value and is CGC grading worht it?
    Thanks

  • 71 admin // Feb 19, 2010 at 8:52 am

Sounds like a really nice comic book. If it is in the higher grades it may definitely be worth sending to CGC. The pricing is all over the place for actual sales. For example, over the last few years CGC 8.0 copies have sold anywhere from the low $300’s to over $600. Food for thought.

  • 72 CAllen // Feb 26, 2010 at 11:00 am

I have several books that I’m interested in selling as a lot, and I’m trying to get an idea of what they would be worth as a lot. Or would it mean more profit if I sold seperate? 1972 #4 Marvel Team-up, Spidey and the Xmen….1972 #5 Marvel Team-up Spidey and Vision….1972 #1 The Defenders….1973 FIRST ISSUE #1 Ghost Rider….1972 #1 Luke Cage HERO for HIRE….1984 Vol. 1,2,3 and 4 Four Iss. Lmted Series, The Transformers.

  • 73 Peter Wilton-Davies // Mar 8, 2010 at 8:02 am

Hello Admin, I have just cataloged my collection of over 1300 comics (mostly Marvel mid 80’s and some DC) and have an Excel document with them all on. Do you have any advice on who I could ask to look at this to see if it is worth selling as a collection? Many thanks. Peter WD

  • 74 admin // Mar 11, 2010 at 2:13 pm

1980’s comic books are usually sold in bulk, especially in the numbers you have. If you decide to sell them you can go to a comic store and expect to get an offer of so much per book, 20 cents is not out of the norm, sometimes less depending on what you have. If you have a lot of Superhero books and they are in great condition it is probably worth your time to go through them and assign a value. With that many comics I usually recommend picking up a copy of the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide and getting an estimate. If you want to send me the list I can give you some ideas about selling. Become a member and you will have the e-mail to contact me.

I love zombies movies and back in 2003 I purchased Walking Dead #1 , #2 until #20 before I got married and forgot about it. Recently I was surprise to find out that the value of these comics have gone up especially the first one. How do I know what is actual value of this comic. FYI, I sealed all my comics in a plastic bag in a very good condition.
